Christmas Card Wreath

Christmas is here!

I told myself I would wait until at least December 1st to haul the Christmas decorations out, but changed my mind yesterday. My five year has been begging me to since mid-November and when it looks like this outside...

It just feels like Christmas.

Here is my 2 year old hanging out on a snow dish. We built a mini sled hill in our front yard using a snow drift yesterday. We got A LOT of snow over the holiday weekend.

Only half of our Christmas stuff is up so we are starting out slow but...the festivities have begun.

Anyway...back to the card wreath. I got the tutorial from Kojodesigns Tea Wreath Tutorial.

We haven't gotten any Christmas cards yet so I stuffed our postcards in the clothespins. Obviously we haven't sent ours out yet either. :)

We send postcards to most of our extended family to save on postage and then just direct them to our family blog. It was my compromise between not sending any cards and sending a full card. The postage is about half as much and cheaper to print/make since there are no envelopes and no folds.

Yes...the clothespins are kind of close together but if I use a couple pins for one card it works great.

Kojo used it as a place to put gift cards and cards at a baby shower too. Clever huh? I made my wreath green and white so I can use it outside of Christmas if I want.

Merry Decorating! :)

Pumpkin Soup

Before I start dragging out the Christmas decor and thinking peppermint instead of pumpkin, I thought I would share this really easy recipe with you.

I found this recipe from allrecipes. It was one of the first ones on the search list and had great ratings. Even still...I couldn't help being a little apprehensive about how it would fare with my husband and kids. I had 5 pumpkins sitting on my ghetto oven ready to be used so I pressed on anyway...
and boy am I glad! Oh my...it was delicious! My five year old didn't love it but my two year old and my husband downed it.

Really...you have to try it. It says to use fresh pumpkin. I think 1-2 fresh pumpkins should give you plenty of pulp. We are making it again tonight to have with dinner.

Here is the link.

Thanksgiving Lunch and Giveaway update

I hope you all had a fun, safe holiday weekend!
I can't believe Thanksgiving has come and gone so quickly! It has just been our small family of four this year but still lots of fun and busy, busy. To be honest I haven't gotten onto blogger for most of the week! It has been a great break but I realized that I should really give If only they would nap another chance to claim her prize. If I haven't been on, chances are she hasn't either.

So... If Only They Would Nap...please email me or comment by Monday, November 29, 12 PM MDT to claim your prize.

And if you have won and not contacted Tara...please do so soon!

Then...and I mean it this time :)...if I do not hear from her I will pick another winner. Promise.

*The picture above is of our pumpkin soup and rolls from Thanksgiving lunch/dinner...it was my favorite dish even over the pies! It was soooo good. I will have to share the recipe before December comes this week and pumpkins are out of "style."

Thankful Tree

Taking inspiration from this post from Be Different Act Normal, and from a friend who did something similar we made a Thankful Tree yesterday.

My son and I cut all the leaves out of leaf scrapbook paper. Then as apart of Family Home Evening we wrote down what we are thankful for on the leaves, punched holes in them, and tied them to a tree branch {it's white because it is our Easter one} 2-4 at a time with brown string.

It was really fun and helped my kindergartner practice his scissor cutting skills and writing skills. It was also so so easy...which I love. Kids crafts are more likely to happen around here if they're easy.

It is great way to help your family get into a thankful mindset for this Thursday.

Don't forget...the Mamachee Crochet Pattern giveaway ends tonight at 9 PM MDT.

Mamachee: The Oma House Slipper and Giveaway

If you want to skip my babbling go to the bottom of the post for giveaway instructions. :)
On the top of my Christmas "to make" list, was a nice crocheted slipper for my Grandmother. She is the one who taught me how to crochet. It only took me oh...like 12 or so years to finally catch on, but I am learning to love it more and more and I have her to thank. I have several doilies and intricate lacy blankets made by her that I cherish.

Recently, her eye sight has deteriorated so much that she has had to give up crocheting.

Since I was a little girl I have always remembered her wearing her crocheted slippers around the house and thought making her a new pair this Christmas might just be the perfect gift.

I searched on etsy for the right pattern, found the Oma House Slipper from Mamachee and fell in love. It was the perfect basic slipper and  when she mentioned in her pattern description that she made these slippers with her grandma, I was sold. I ordered it and got to work.
My stitches aren't perfect but I got better as I went along.

This is the original slipper with no changes. I used 100% cotton thread which I think looks cool but found that it is not as comfy.

I added some Mary Jane straps to the sides of some...I don't even know if I did it "correctly." I just slip stitched into the side of the slipper, chained 11, turned and dc back starting with the 2nd ch, and then slip stitched back into the side of the slipper again. I also did another slip stitch to the middle of the strap so it would hold better, before tying off. I sewed buttons on with needle and thread and then slipped the strap over through one of the crochet holes. Pretty simple.

These blue ones are for my Grandma.

These kind of remind me of a banana. :)

I had some leftover yellow yarn and some navy blue in my stash, so I decided to experiment with this one.

You crochet with two strands of yarn at the same time so I thought it would be fun to try to blend two colors for the sole. It turned out a little wacky but kind of cool too. I crocheted it kind of tight so they are a little small for me. Whoops.

I think... the banana ones will be mine. :)

I loved this pattern so much that I contacted Tara to see if she would do a giveaway and she agreed! Tara not only has an etsy shop: Mamachee, but she also has a cool blog:

She, of course has great crochet projects, but she also crafts!

Her blog even has some free patterns. Got to love free...

Now to the giveaway.

She is giving 1 pattern away to 3 winners!
So your chances are pretty good.

I really like the Oma House Slipper but you can choose from any pattern of equal or lesser value should you win...which is essentially most of her patterns! Take a minute to go to  her shop and browse around to see all the cool patterns she has.

Here are some of my favorites:

That hat on the left is perfect for my boys! I am kind of kicking myself for not purchasing her 3 pattern bundle deal.
So cute right? I need another baby to make these for! :)
I want one of these hats for myself. I love that scalloped detail.

Now...Look at this! I love how she used twine/jute for the soles. She says you can also make the soles of the Oma House Slipper with jute for a real shoe. I may be doing just that this next Spring.
I have to admit I think this one is above my skill level at the moment but isn't it too cool to not share?!
Oh my...a bear or bunny eared hat and matching bushy tailed diaper cover. Adorable.
I am a sucker for scarfs.

Aren't her stitches perfect?

And of course I love these Oma House Slippers:

Are you a crocheter? Her patterns are clear, simple, and she has great stuff in her shop.

Not a crocheter? Her patterns make great gifts! I know I would like more patterns.

Shuffle Band

I posted this over at Kojodesigns earlier this week but I like to post my guest posts here too.

This shuffle band is a lot like this i-pod armband found here but for about 1/4 of the cost.

Here goes:
_______________________________________________
Hello Kojodesign readers! I am so excited to be guest posting for Kirstin and Jordan.

These gals are incredibly talented and so genuine and kind.

These girls have unforgettable crafts too. Their ruffle pomander ornaments and their tea wreath {which I just found out was featured on Apartment Therapy - congrats girls!} have been on my mind for about a year...and those projects are actually on my to do docket this next week.

They have been rocking SYTYC. Jordan's photography is breathtaking - just check out their pictures from last week's SYTYC entry! I just love Kirstin and Jordan. How can you not?

So when they asked me to come celebrate gifts for guys I was thrilled... and admittedly nervous! Guys are hard to craft for. I don't need to tell you that I'm sure. I played around with a few ideas, but after much deliberation.....

I give you the shuffle band!

It is an armband that holds your i-pod shuffle while you exercise.

Even better...I give you an I-pod shuffle exercise arm band for about $2.50! No kidding! It is a fast, easy craft and sure to be a winner for that fitness buff in your life.

*just in case you were wondering...the cotton symbol on my husband's i-pod is because I won him this one playing some matching game at his university... i am not endorsing cotton or anything :)

Want to make one? Believe it or not the hardest part is getting the buckle. Once you have all the materials though you can whip one up in about 30 minutes or less!

You need:
-A sewing machine

-Black thread

-18+ inch piece of 1 1/2 inch wide black elastic

-3 inch piece of 3/4 inch wide black elastic

-*Black Velcro:
        7+ inches of loop
        3 inches of hook

-**One tri-glider buckle piece

*I bought the 99 cent bundle of Velcro at Joann's that has a yard each of loop and hook. You'll be sure to have plenty and it's inexpensive.

**I could not find a tri-glider piece or buckle large enough for the 1 1/2 inch elastic at Hobby Lobby or Joanns or a specialty bead store...I was starting to get discouraged!...but then I found it. I had to go to a sporting goods store. They had a six pack of 1 1/2 inch wide tri-glider buckles for $1.99. So one buckle is about 35 cents a piece after tax! Just be sure to look in the camping or rock climbing section.

If you use a coupon on the elastic you save even more.

1. Cut your pieces. ** Please keep in mind: These look a bit longer than my finished project because I started out too big.

My husband's bicep is about 14 1/2 inches around. So here are the measurements I used for him:

Wide elastic {1 1/2 inch}: 18 1/2 inches
Narrow elastic {3/4 inch}: 3 inches {this is what it should be regardless of arm size}
Velcro loop side {soft, fuzzy side}: 7 1/4 inches
Velcro hook side{rough, spiky side}: 2 3/4 inches

2. Loop your wide elastic into the tri-glider buckle piece. Make sure the slightly raised side is up. You don't want the buckle digging into their arm.

Pull about 1.5-2 inches through, fold the raw side of the elastic under...

...and sew closed. I used two lines of straight stitches. You can use a zig-zag stitch if you prefer. I think the straight-stitch looks cleaner.

 3. Attach the narrow elastic to make the i-pod holder. Somehow I must have erased the picture of it pinned and ready to be sewn...sorry.

You simply fold the elastic under on both sides about 1/2 an inch. Pin one side about 1/2 inch away from first seam you made when sewing on the tri-glider. You also want to make sure it is as centered in the middle of the band.

Sew closed twice on each side: on the sides at the fold and on the inside where the folded elastic ends.

The i-pod nicely clips on right here as you can see.

4. Now...grab that other end. Try not to stab your finger with scissors...see band aid on my finger below. :)

Fold it under and sew closed. The folded portion of my end uses about an inch total of elastic.

Make sure you are folding it in toward the right side  of the elastic...the same side your i-pod holder is on...so that when you loop it through the tri-glider the right smooth side will show on the outside, and the sewn under side will be Velcro-ed down.

5. Now for the Velcro. Add the hook Velcro to the folded end, sewn under side up. Put it right on top of the fold to the very edge.

Then add the loop velcro right under it. This shows more space between the i-pod holder and the loop velcro because this was taken before I re-sized it. The Velcro should end about 1 to 1 1/2 inch away from the i-pod holder. I also had the hook and loop velcro touching in my finished band.

This is the finished product so you can see what I mean:

I used a straight stitch around the velcro as well because it looks cleaner, but found later that a zig zag stitch on the short ends of the velcro is important to allow for stretch. If you do not do this the stitches will come loose.

And you're done!

Thread it through the buckle...slide it onto your arm...pull it tight...

clip on the i-pod...pick your favorite workout songs...

and you're ready to go!

This was meant to be a panning shot. Bear with me please. :)

I tried this on my arm. It fits but I have a nice annoying tail hanging off. My guess is this would best fit someone with an arm circumference of about 12-18 inches.

Variations:

Make it longer so you can put it around your leg and attach a pedometer to it.

Make a brightly colored one by dyeing some elastic. I was excited to do this, but my husband insisted on black. :)

A great companion to this band could be a new i-pod shuffle if he doesn't already have one, or an iTunes gift card.

Thanks again to Kirstin and Jordan for letting me party with you guys!

Happy Guy Crafting!
