Made from Scratch Valentine Chocolate Box

A manly box of chocolates for my Man. 

I got this idea from Martha Stewart. Love her. She has great ideas. But...I don't love her tutorials all the time. They often leave me with a lot of questions. So this is what I did. I hope it helps you if you have been wanting to make one of these too.

Materials:

Large Cereal Box
Pencil
Craft Scissors
Ruler
Straight Paper cutter {optional}
Hot glue
Scrapbook paper - two 12x12 and two 8 1/2 x 11

1. I cut up a cereal box. Martha recommends poster board which would work great too. This was just free and on hand.

I cut two identical hearts and four 1-inch strips {2 a full inch and 2 a scant inch} about a foot long. 

Note: I also tried this with some cardboard from a scrapbook paper pack. It wasn't pliable enough, it cracked and bent funny.

2. I cut my scrapbook paper.

You should end up with: 

- 2 scrapbook paper hearts just a little larger than the cereal box hearts
*I traced the hearts on scrapbook paper and then added about a half inch all the way around.

- 2 hearts a bit smaller than the cereal box hearts

- 4 1-inch paper strips {12 inches long and 2 of the strips a scant 1 inch wide}

 3. I glued the scrapbook paper hearts onto the cereal box hearts and then snipped fringe along the perimeter before wrapping and hot gluing to the other side.

4. I then glued on the smaller paper heart.

5. Now for the strips. I hot glued them into two hearts. You want the heart that is a scant inch wide to be about 1/4 of an inch smaller than the other one. I cut about 1/8 of an inch off the ends of each the strips before gluing them into a heart.

These are the "lips" of the box. I guess...I don't know. I making that up, but that is what I'll call it. :)

6. I made sure the scant heart fit inside the full inch wide one like so...

7. I then glued on the scrapbook paper to the "lips" of the box.

8. I took the wider and larger "lip" and glued how I wanted it to look, onto one of the heart pieces with hot glue. You will probably be a neater hot gluer than me. I am certain. :)

9. I then inserted the smaller "lip" into the top lid I just made. Be sure to not press it all the way in. I added glue to the rim and then placed the other heart on top.

After it cooled/dried,  I pulled off the second base lid and reinforced it with more hot glue.

 10. Here are my two pieces. A top and a bottom.

I then added the candy. I just bought a $1 mini pack of my husband's favorite candy bar.

 Wrote a love note and tied it up with a ribbon.

 All done and ready for Valentine's Day...

 All he has to do is peek inside...

Oh...He is going to love me for this.

I just know it.

It's not too girly, but still romantic.

Should I mention that this only cost me a dollar?

The ribbon was recycled from some pajamas packaging from Christmas. :) I love that he doesn't have to pick through the chocolates to find ones he likes. I know he is going to love every single one!
