LEGO Lovers $100 Giveaway

If you don't know already, we are somewhat LEGO obsessed at our house.
Okay. Maybe a lot obsessed.

It's true we play with LEGOS at our house daily and sometimes all day...especially in the summer time.

I even threw a whole birthday party dedicated to LEGOS for my oldest son, Owen, last year.

I love that they are high quality toys and mostly kid proof. They last forever, unless they get chewed on too much. In fact, most of my sons' LEGO collection is from my brother and I when we were young. I guess you could say they're vintage. But you can only tell that they are because the sets are no longer offered. We very much love LEGOS.

So when I heard about the new LEGO DUPLO Read & Build set, I got excited about sharing it with my three year old son, Reid. He shares his brother's enthusiasm for LEGO anything, so using LEGO bricks to engage his interest in reading only seems natural.

Once we got the package in the mail, Reid excitedly opened it up and  made quick work of assembling all the animals.

Then he disassembled them and we did it all again...reading the book over and over again as we went.

The LEGO bricks add an element of fun that really helped draw him into the story, helped him retain more of the storyline, and helped him stay happily focused.

Incorporating building LEGO animals into our reading experience opened the opportunity for more interaction between us as we role played with the animals and wove improvised lines into the story.

What kid doesn't like to hear their mom oink like a pig while making a pig hop around and nuzzle him in his tickle spots?

The LEGO DUPLO Read & Build set gets big brownie points from me for bringing together auditory, tactile, and visual learning into one activity; making Reid's reading experience well rounded and more likely to stick.

Plus...aren't the little DUPLO animals adorable?

They've already joined our other DUPLO LEGOS for other fun adventures with our CARS 2 set.

I'm looking forward to Natalie growing into them. One benefit of being the youngest is that you get the coolest hand me down toys right? Hopefully, probably, by then Reid will be willing to give them up. Right now...not so much. He is super possessive of them at the moment.

So...Want to win some LEGOs of your own...since Reid won't share? ; )

I get to giveaway one $100 LEGO gift card to one lucky reader!

That's a lot of LEGOS, yes?

I would love to get my little one stared with some duplos. We're doing some Montessori activities to learn letters and this could fall right in line.

I think that learning to read involves lots of "repeat" preformances! When you can get your littles engaged and wanting to re-read a story, all the better! I'd love to have this for my son!

OH this is awesome! We are big readers in my house. With my daughter going to school this year, I would love to have these for my son to get him interested in reading! LOVE! Thanks!

The Lego read and play sets would help children remember the storyline. This is so cool!

My kids already enjoy reading, especially my son, but with the added element of building something while reading would be greatly enjoyed by my son and my daughter. That is an awesome idea. LEGO is amazing. My hubs still has his LEGOs from when he was a kid and can't wait until they are old enough to play with the smaller ones. How fun! Even if we don't win, I am definitely going to keep this in mind for Christmas.

Our three year old would love to play with the new sets. It would help her learn to read by tying reading into familiar things she already knows. Lego's and animals. Wouldn't be so overwhelming for her.

I've also recently discovered Lego Duplo for us.
I've also blogged about it here:
http://meinekleinekreativewelt.blogspot.no/2012/07/coloryourlife.html
If I hold up a animal, my almost two year old son,
makes the sound of that animal.
So I think kids learn a lot by Lego Duplo.
Even when he put together the blocks.
(sorry my bad englisch)

I think that concentration and attention are pre- reading skills that would be encouraged with this.

I would love for my daughter to get into legos - great tool for building up her hand-eye coordination as well as creative building skills!

I've always heard that doodlers tend to remember what they hear better while doodling. Seems to me the same is would be true for kids and Legos, especially since what they are doing pertains to the story line. What a great gift idea. I have 12 nieces and nephews (with #13 on the way!) so we ALWAYS need fun gifts to give.

Allison Waken said...

LOVE the Read and Build set - SUCH a great way to get boys to stay involved with reading. At their younger ages mine were always too busy to want to sit and read for longer than a few minutes. I love the added element of play! Perfect!

I have two boys that would rather play legos all day instead of doing anything related to letters or reading. While I appreciated the open ended play legos offer & know that they are learning tons while playing I also know that eventually they need to read - and pretty soon for my rising kindergartner! I think this series might be just the ticket to get them excited about reading!

Kimberly said...

I love reading, but my husband doesn't. I think one of these build and read books would be a great way to ensure my daughter adopts my love of reading!!

Lisa said...

Can't wait until the little guy is old enough to play with these! The fun never ends w/ legos!

Beth Riley said...

With a two-year old, he can't read yet. But we play with Legos daily. He can sing songs and remember storylines though. With this set, I feel like he would remember the story better. Then when he's a little bigger, he can know what the word is and pick out the letters in it.

Mrs Chronic-Shock said...

This would help my 3 year old son stay focused on the story and apply it visually. I think he is going to be a visual learner like Mama :)

heidi said...

how awesome! I think it will help by keeping them engaged.

We are a lego household, too! I love that these Read and Build sets can be used for girls, too. I would love to do it together with my 4 year old.

My kids would love this! I think making reading more interactive helps to keep them interested and involved. This would also help the younger kids learn sight words like "pig" and "sheep" and I can picture my older son making his own stories with the characters and acting it out with the toys. So fun!

Julie Rosenhan said...

My sons loves Legos so much. He's still a little young for reading but he'll focus on books especially if there are animals involved. This set looks great!

kirsten said...

With three boys legos are a must in our family. But I think that my husband likes them most.

Anjie Behunin said...

SO cute! My kids are too old for Duplo (9 & 6) but I think I might get this for my 2 year old nephew for Christmas. I LOVE the idea of building the animals at the same time they can see them in the book. He would have so much fun!

Megan said...

Love these! I actually bought that exact set for my 2 year old niece for her birthday. Lucas is drawn to the bright colors and the story book when we play with them!

I think Little Man would connect the sounds and the shapes of animals more strongly with the letters on the page with the Read & Builds. Plus, he's an on-the-go kind of guy who loves Legos, so I think that he would be more likely to pay attention to a book when there are Legos involved.

(Sorry, deleted old comment, as I didn't say how the books/duplo could help a child learn to read!) It would keep the attention of the child, as well as inspire him/her to read the book to themselves if they want to play with the Duplo on their own. Also, using many ways of taking in reading (visual, aural, tactile) is very beneficial. My six year old, who is struggling with reading, would love one of these! (P.S. can I enter on behalf of my mom, who lives in the US?)

It would help connect the fact that what's on the page actually means something.

My 5 year old is starting to read and he loves his school books that have instructions on how to do something. It helps him feel so accomplished in building his self esteem! Combining reading AND legos...Pure genius!

My daughter takes after her big brothers and has become a big Lego fan. Maybe this would finally get her to sit still and pay attention

We LOVE Legos in our house. We are always building castles and robots. These would be great especially for my 4 year old to engage him in a reading activity, which he doesn't have much of an interest in...Legos would help.

Wow, what a great product! I think the LEGO DUPLO Read & Build will help my kids learn to read with all those fun colors block building and interaction. For sure this is a lot more fun than just reading the book.

This is a great idea! I am a speech therapist who works in an elementary school. I have many boys who are also Lego obsessed! I have learned that I absolutely can not redirect them off of the subject of latest Lego sets until they are satisfied that I have fully comprehended what they want to tell me. Because of this, I often spend the first 5 minutes of each session discussing Legos. I have tried to incorporate some goals into these dicussions (like sequences - what it takes to build something, recalling an experience of buying them from a store, or using appropriate tenses during our conversations. All which have worked very well.

These books look like a great addition. I see so many possibilities for expanding this reading lesson into language lessons as well. I especially like the possibility to link them on top of each other and working on prepositions! - 'The pig is under the horse which is on of the rooster.' and then have them recreate it. Great comprehension and expressive possiblities!

Love your blog Delia. Thanks for keeping me thinking of ways to continue to inspire and serve my students (and family).

We love our Lego Read and Build set. Fun for reading and my Jumping Bean can use them with his other Lego Duplo sets, too.

My twenty-nine year old husband still requests Lego sets for his birthday and Christmas. We're expecting our first baby and I know that Legos will be a major player in the bond between father and child. I think that the Lego Duplo Read and Build will foster an interest in reading, too. I'm already ordering a set for my nursery and my niece. Thanks for the opportunity!

This is great! My son loves reading and I think this would help my 15 month old daughter stay focused longer and love reading too.

Making reading part of their "real" world if the best thing for children (I'm a grandma who is also a teacher). If we can encourage connections between the real world and book, the learning is lifelong. Would love to have lego opportunities for my grandkids when they come to visit!!

mary said...

I love the fact that the book/DUPLO combo really engages the reader. My nephew is a huge LEGO fan, and is just learning to read. I think these would be a nice change of material.

Love the idea of adding a book to the legos for added learning experience! It will help the kids pay attention to the story for longer! My kids all love legos and hope to win.

My boys love books but I can't seem to get them to love legos so I am hoping these books could help that way. Legos teach so many important skills in such a fun way!!

mrsrachel said...

My boys LOVE duplos and books, so I think mixing the two would be a perfect way to encourage them towards reading.

Christie Cook said...

I think the way these would help my child learn to read best is by being able to re-tell the story in his own words. Children love to re-tell a story and when they do it sitting on your lap and pointing to the writing while making up their own version, they are learning concepts of print and how to enjoy reading!

Brooke said...

My son loves this idea and has from the moment he first saw it. I would hope this would help with word recognition the more we played.

Shannon said...

My kids are past the learning to read phase but I totally see how this could be a great "win" for young readers - especially tactile learners who will benefit from being able to interact with the story in such a hands on way.

Kelly said...

Boy number four could really use an incentive to read (he keeps telling me his brothers will read to him, so he doesn't need to learn). I'm pretty sure this would do the trick, as he LOVES legos!

Bretterson said...

This could help my child learn to read by engaging them in an activity that helps them truly interact with the text, by way of the building blocks. Very cool product!

Jill said...

my lo has loved her duplo since she first got them, and her megablox before that! we're ready for baby sister to start playing with the giant blocks, and would love to add some pink ones into the mix since all we have are girls! reading time is special for us, and would be more interactive and fun with blocks, I think it would engage my girls better, and help the little one chewon the books less!

We are Lego crazy at our house!!! They are wonderful for imagination and creation.

Our newly-turned 5yo son has chores and earns a nickle for each - he saves up ALL his money for Lego sets. It usually takes him 2 months to buy one, but he is always so proud.

A $100 Lego gift certificate would just bowl him over! :)

My son is a HUGE lego fan. Loves them in all shapes and sizes. I think the key to learning, is getting them interested in one way or another. Being that he already loves legos, and loves being read to (He is learning to read at age four...wohoo), it would be lots of fun to introduce lego books that can incorporate his love and imagination with his lego creations.

My son absolutely LOVES legos. I think the key to learning is engaging the child, capturing their attention, working with their imagination. I think the Lego Duplo Read and Build, would be fun for my son. And when your having fun, learning is easy. Incorporating something he loves, likes legos, and adding in books (which he loves), would be a great tool to helping my son polish up his reading skills. This would be wonderful!
