Sequin Cuff Tutorial and Sequin Accessories

August 28, 2013 · Delia 14 Comments

I guess you could say I have sequin fever this week!

I took the leftovers from the sequin pencil skirt yesterday and made some more accessories.

As a work at home mom, I don’t have a lot of occasions to wear a sequin skirt. A sequin cuff however?

I think I can manage that.

I like the juxtaposition of the casual tee and jeans with the blingy cuff.

It’s a cinch to make too!

Materials:

Scraps of sequin and twill fabric (see measurements below)
Black thread
Thick cloth hair elastic
Large shank button

*You can measure your wrist and tweak my measurements if needed.

Cut a piece of sequin fabric and a piece of black twill to 8 1/2 x 3 inches.

Put them together, right sides together. Sew all the way around with a 3/8 inch seam allowance, but leave a 1.5 inch opening at one of the short ends.

Trim at the corners and the sides to reduce bulk. Be careful not to cut through any stitches and don’t trim down the seam allowance at the short end with the opening.

Turn it right sides out. A chopstick can help you work the corners flat and even.
Flip the raw edges inward at the opening. Slide the thick hair elastic into the opening.

Pinch the elastic together (not shown above) and sew a straight line along this short end.

Wrap it around your wrist and mark where you need to sew on a button.

Hand sew on your shank button. You’re done!

Now rock it! 馃檪

(Warning: It sheds a bit but not near as much as the skirt. )

Oh and the bling doesn’t stop there.

I of course had to make a sequin bow… or two.

I cut a piece of sequin fabric, 7 3/4 x 2 1/2 inches to get this size.

I experimented with leather and glitter elastic. The leather one is my favorite of course.

There is something so cool about mixing casual and costume fancy.

And last, I made a sequin clutch!

I altered the shape of Caila Made’s Love Letter Clutch – free pattern just a bit, to get this:

I really enjoyed the tutorial and pattern, but I didn’t enjoy making it with sequin fabric. You have to glue the clasp hardware to the fabric and the sequins were a pain during this process. Ick. The sequin pieces were getting jammed and were just not going in great. I finally got it to sit mostly okay, but not perfect.
It was fun to make a clasped clutch though – my first! I can’t wait to use Caila’s pattern again to make some cotton versions.

Sources:
Cuff: Button from my stash, hair elastic is Goody brand
Bow: Leather scrapped from an old jacket, Glitter Elastic from a place similar to this listing
Clasped Clutch: Clasp is from Jo-Ann Fabrics, purple silk lining from my stash
*The sequin fabric for all three projects came from my Go To Sew Mystery Box – read more about that HERE, but you can find a source to similar fabrics at the end of THIS post.

I like the sequined cuff. As the SAHM of two little girls who like to climb all over me (especially today…) a sequined skirt would either not survive long or not get any use. (It looked like a lot of fun, though!) But a sequined cuff–that's manageable. And I'm sure my baby would love it.
I love your pictures–you are having so much fun.
