Nesting with Happy Together

February 2, 2012 · Delia 14 Comments

How about a lovely project from Jessica from Happy Together for today?
I have a special fondness for Jessica and her amazing blog. When I first entered “blogland” very awkward and unsure of what the heck I was doing {and frankly I still feel that way sometimes}, she took me under her wing in a way. She left me encouraging comments, asked me to guest post on her blog. I gobbled up all the sewing goodness and beautiful photography she always showcases with an eagerness to learn, and I’m still learning from her. She is a truly inspiring and genuinely kind individual.聽
聽
And her project today is really fun.
It is a perfect baby toy and definitely on my to do list now.

Here’s Jessica…

Hello readers of Delia Creates! This is Jessica from Happy Together. Isn’t it so exciting that she’s having a baby? And that the baby is a girl?!?! I have two girls myself and love it. In fact, one of them is still pretty small. I decided to share a project that benefits her play time.

I had a pair of socks with little animals on them that were so cute and fun for baby since she is loving her feet right now. I decided to make some more socks similar to them for her.

These are basically appliques from old stained onesies with crinkly plastic inside. Then they are sewn on the sock to be worn during playtime.

As you can tell by the pics, the girl just didn’t want to do anything but try to get her crinkle toes when she had them on!

Not even big sister coming up on the bed to play distracted her from the task at hand.

Let’s start with what you will need. Grab some clothing with appliques or graphics that you like. Make sure they the “picture” is big enough for this. You don’t want to put something too small on these socks just in case baby was able to get it off (ps….speaking of that, I recommend that these be worn when supervised if concerned about it coming off).

Then cut out the “picture”, making sure to leave as much room as possible around it for sewing. Also, make sure to cut out another piece of the clothing for the back. So for one pair of socks, you should have 4 pieces.

Place the back piece down right side up and place the “picture” piece on top wrong side down. Then sew around the image, but leaving a space large enough to turn the piece right side out. I tried to sew as close to the image as possible.

Then turn them right side out.

Next, grab some crinkly plastic. I used some “trash” from food items we had. Just don’t use sharp plastic, ok? If those sun chip bags are still very loud, they would work great! lol

Cut the plastic into small pieces that will fit inside and stuff it in.

Then turn in the sides of the opening and sew around the whole crinkle piece with a small stitch so there is no way this thing is coming open.

Then place it on the top of the sock and sew in place. If sewing by hand, make sure to sew it on super good. You could also use the sewing machine to tack it in place at a few spots. Another thing is you could even use some fabric glue right on the middle bottom, put it on the sock, then once dry, tack it on around the edges. Fabric glue is no joke! Trust me. I’ve used it plenty of times only to realize I would like to remove what I glued. I have never been able to get anything off that was glued with fabric glue.

Enjoy everyone! Thank you Delia for having me. You are super sweet and such a good momma and wife! I love reading your blog 馃檪

Isn’t this so fun? I like how using existing appliques makes it look so professional. I just know my baby is going to love having a pair of these.

Thank you for nesting with me today Jessica!

Fabulous idea! One question: doesn't the plastic melt when you put the socks in the dryer?

um those are so cute! I absolutely love the idea. Another instant gratification project: perfect for nesting. For a boy, cars and dinosaurs would be so fun too!

Loving your nesting series! Thank you for doing it. I think I am going to need to re-name a pin board on my pinterest account "if I have another baby or if one of my siblings make me an auntie projects" I am getting so many great ideas here.

XOXO!!!! Thanks for having me 馃檪

Bernice: It hasn't with mine, but our dryer kind of isn't the best when it comes to heat (the joys of renting ;). But, if you think it could happen, just let them air dry. They are so small it really wouldn't take long for them to air dry at all. I air dry most of the baby/kid clothes and all anyways to help it last longer.

I was wondering about drying them with the plastic too. But this is a really cute idea! My son is obsessed with his feet right now!
