Chore Dice

May 24, 2010 · Delia 15 Comments

We have been needing some chore organizationaround here and after some brainstorming I came up with using chore blocks or dice!

We have one block for our Monday cleaning day. Each boy gets to roll to see which chore he helps me with that day. They can mop, wipe down the table, clean the mirror, vacuum their own room {keep in mind that they are five and 1 1/2 – which is also why I made sure there was a picture on each side so they could understand}.

Then we have one for every night where they can set the table, clear the table, help with dishes, etc. There are also spaces for “roll again,” “your choice,” and “free pass.” Everyone rolls it so it is fair to everyone (wink) and there is an element of fun to see what they will get each time. It has been a week since we started using them and so far so good.

In case you were wondering… the third block is for when we have family prayer and scripture study at night. We roll to see who will be in charge of each thing. It is great for deciding pretty much everything else too!

I know these look a little rough around the edges. I don’t have a vinyl cutter. I am sure you could do this much cuter that way, but if you want to know how I did this for just a few cents read on.

Get blocks cut at home depot  from scrap wood. If you ask nicely, some locations cut free. You can usually find some scrap wood at the front of the store by the contractor’s doors. This is why this cost me a few cents. I paid 54 cents for the wood, had it cut for free and also have some wood leftover for something else. {The paint and modpodge I already had on hand}

Then sand, sand, sand all the blocks.

Now you are ready to start making the chore dice:

6. Sand the blocks again if you want a distressed look {or need to have a distressed look because you messed up a little like me! ;)} Mod podge all surfaces once, let it dry, and then apply one more time.

Then roll away…

    I love this idea so clever. Too bad I have no one to used it on just yet:( my 2.5 year old twins have non verbal chores like clean up after themselves.

    This is such a great idea. I just found this on Pinterest and I'm so glad I did. I'm going to make this. I also have a 5 year old and a 1 1/2 year old. The 5 year old is going to love it. The 1 year old is going to try and eat it. Everyone wins!
