I was perusing the clearance rack at Walmart recently…they have a lot of things on sale for $1. There were only way small sizes and way big sizes so at first I was bummed…but then I got thinking. I bought some extra large shirts made some alterations I now have a new shirt and skirt and all I spent was 2 bucks!
Gotta love that.
First the shirt:
This knit shirt was X-Large and I normally wear medium.
I used another shirt, I like the fit of, as a pattern and cut it down to size on one side all the way through the sleeves…
{hey there is my bleach shirt before it got bleach doodled :)} and then folded it over to cut it identically on the other side.
I sewed up the sides and now I have a very comfy shirt.
I like how long the sleeves and the bottom are.
Very modest. Definitely passes the head, shoulders, knees, and toes test. 馃檪
Now for the skirt:
I took this XXL large top and cut off the top. Then I added some t-shirt material as a waistband.
I started out wearing heels but tossed them off and slid on my boots. 馃檪 Much better.
I only had so much of this teal knit material so I had to piece it a bit…not as pretty as using one piece. It mostly gets covered up anyway…and it can be used as a maternity skirt! Score! I am NOT pregnant now though. I have to be clear about that! 馃檪
I like that if the waistband peeks out it kind of just looks like I have another shirt underneath. It is way comfy {and….shhhh… kind of Spring-y looking but we won’t worry about that!}. 馃檪

I will never look at a clearance rack the same. It doesn’t have your size? No problem! Find something you can make into your size. Beauty Clark.

You are such an inspiration I think I'll spend more time at the clearance rack! Also I wanted to tell you, I am home visiting my mom and we tried bleaching some inexpensive t's I got at Old Navy. They turned out great except for the fact that we left the bleach on all night and washed them in the morning. Not such a good idea. We now have lots of holes in our shirts 馃檪 Good thing we
I recently found some great buys on their clearance racks as well. I also go for the larger sizes….it's more for your money! I love the shirt/skirt transformation. Very cute.
Definitely gonna be checking out the clearance racks more!

I just bought that same exact shirt to make a skirt for my daughter! It is the pinky/red one and it was a small but I still think it will fit her just fine. I had to pay $3 for it though. There was only one and I didn't want to risk it not being there another week. Thanks for the idea/tutorial!

Such a great idea with the skirt. I don't know how to sew zippers so I always shy away from modifying dresses/skirts. But next time I'm totally trying the t-shirt material idea. Awesome.
