Is Pinterest ever expanding your to do list and not your to done list? Yeah me too.
I also wonder how well some of those pins really work.
So every Thursday, I’m going to try out a pin from my pinterest board. I call it:
It will be my way to finally try out those great ideas rather than keeping them just neatly tucked away on my pin boards. I’ll also give my two cents on how well I think it worked. But don’t worry. My goal will be to keep things positive around here as best I can.
To kick things off, I have a pin from my “child’s play” board.
I’ve seen a couple recipes for this, but this one is the simplest.
Just mix 8 cups of flour and 1 cup of baby oil. Easy to remember right?
I put a batch in a gallon zip top bag for each of my boys to help minimize gooey-ness and messiness while they mixed it. I thought about dyeing it, but didn’t want to risk it dyeing our clothes and hands. So we kept it white.
The boys combined their batches into a clean, shallow tupperware container and went to town.
And you know what? It worked!
It clumped together great.
Smelled nice.
It even made our hands a bit softer because of the baby oil.
It also…. made a big mess.
I was glad we did it outside.
But really, this wouldn’t be too hard to vacuum up inside either. We have real moon sand and it makes just as big a mess as the real stuff does.
Is it exactly like real moon sand? No. I’m sure the more complicated recipes that call for cornstarch and sand and stuff like that probably do. But this was a wonderful, cheap, easy DIY substitute.
And it makes a ton which multiplies the fun right? (this was just two batches!)
If you need to whip something up quick for some bored kids, this is a good one. You probably have the stuff on hand already as well!

Great idea–I've seen people dedicate a day to pinterest each week and I've been thinking of doing the same. But I only blog about once a week…so yah. I need to step it up if that's ever going to happen, ha ha!
I just made the sand, cornstarch, water mix with some 6-12 year olds this week and yours looks a lot better than ours. When we added the ingredients based on the recipe, it was very soupy. I dumped in nearly twice the amount of sand to try to get it to a moldable product. I was letting the kids measure the ingredients themselves (with a teen guiding them), so its possible some extra water or not
I am loving Pinterest. I have lots of ideas pinned and not lots of time to do any of them. I have completed a few ideas with mixed results. Looking forward to see what you complete.

That is fun. I want to try moon sand too. I try out stuff from my pin board and show it off on Wednesday…it has been super fun…plus then I actually check off some of my pins!

I pinned the same recipe but it was called cloud dough. My daughter loves it! She has a bunch of sand toys that she uses with it. We only play with it outside, though, for the mess factor. I love Pinterest for all the great ideas I get for playing with my kids.
Did it this evening. My 3 year old girl LOVES it so much! My hands are so soft now! I'm just thinking if I should add a bit more oil to make it bit less crumbly! Thanks again for sharing the recipe.

i made this today and i decided to color it….lets just say the gel food coloring doesnt work well and do it before you add baby oil….
awesome! I needed some simple moon sand quickly for co-op tomorrow and… this did the trick. I did not have baby oil, so I substituted 1 batch: rose oil from Body Shop (9 years old — from our honey moon… 馃槈 and still good!) and for the second batch (half batch, so 4:1/2) I used canola oil (nearly scentless) and added some essential oil (lemon grass and some German chamomile). it turned
We are having a snow day today, so this sounds like a perfect activity! I think I’ll put the plastic container in the (dry) bathtub and then let my kids go at it–that way I can just wash them down when they’re done!

We did this when I found a recipe for Moon Dough. I used Lavender baby oil and not only did it smell wonderful but it was a very calming activity too! 馃檪

Can you use something else other than baby oil from Johnson & Johnson ? That brand has chemicals in it and sulphites.
I am sure you could. Maybe a mineral oil would work? Just make sure it is light like baby oil is. Almond oil is a light oil…it’s just 10x as pricey. So, that’s up to you.

I tried this today with my toddler and he LOVED it. Do you know how long it keeps? I don’t want to throw it away after one day of play!
Just wondering if this is a one time use or can you store it for other times?

Good question. I made it when I lived in a dry climate, and it didn’t. We also didn’t hang onto after about 4-5 months. I think if you keep it in an airtight container, you should be okay.

I love the pin test ideal as well. I too pin things and then forget all about them. I will try to set aside a day to test out all my pins. Never would have thought to do that.
