A Cardigan Surprise

May 10, 2013 · Delia 11 Comments

I mostly hate moving.

But, as with most frustrating endeavors, there are silver linings.

One silver lining came in the form of me finding this cardigan I made for the Kid Clothing Swap. I聽originally聽made it for Em, but ended up not using it because it didn’t go with the other pieces I had already made. I spent a lot of time trying to get all the stripes to match up, and got so frustrated that it ended up not coordinating like I had imagined that I threw in my scrap bin…I was having a moment. :)As I was packing, I weeded through my fabric stash and found it again. Turns out, it looks great on Reid! I’m sooo glad I didn’t completely throw it out in my moment of sewing insanity.

I used the awesome Greenpoint Cardigan聽pattern from the talented Adrianna of Hey June (and Crafterhours). It’s a really great pattern, with clear, easy to follow visuals and a smart design.
She specifically states what kind of knit to use and gives specific tests you can put the fabric through to make sure it will work. Well… of course I just went ahead and used the wrong kind of knit. Typical me :)…I just loved the black and white stripe knit so much that I had to see if it would work. It did – sort of, but as she warned it does “grow” a bit when worn because it’s too stretchy.

I made the 4T size and because of “growth” it looks a bit larger and grandpa-ish. Not quite right for the little girl I originally intended it for, but for Reid I think it’s totally cute.I changed up the second button to an orange one just for kicks and let Reid dance around in it front of our new fence.
He insisted on wearing the shoes that didn’t match. I disapproved. He didn’t care. 馃槈 He is waaay too much like me. 馃檪

I will definitely be making this pattern again but this time using the correct kind of knit! I see little Natalie sized ones in our future, don’t you? 馃檪

Speaking of knits… I want to take a minute to tell you about my new sponsor聽Girl Charlee! Girl Charlee聽is a fabric shop dedicated to just knit fabric. Not only do they have a huge selection, but their prices are really great. Like around $5 a yard great!! Add in the 10% off code they offer to all my readers (DELIATEN) and that’s a pretty sweet deal.
I have a project in the works using knits from them. I’m excited!Hope you have a great weekend. And if you haven’t already, be sure to enter the Fabric Match Up Giveaway!*It ends tonight, May 10th.

You know I love this 馃檪 Stripey cardis are my fave, and that orange button is a little bit of genius! I’m in awe that you matched up the stripes on the sleeves too. Extra credit for you! I’m glad you resurrected it from the WIP pile for your cute little guy! (sadly, my WIP pile is where projects go to die and never be heard from again 馃檨 ) I would fully support some teeny tiny cardis for N!!

Everyone begs me to make their kids a cardigan when they see my kids wearing the ones I’ve made from that pattern. I think I’ll have to go order some more knit!

The stripes look GREAT! I think we’re always the hardest on ourselves when it comes to sewing, aren’t we? Love Reid’s green pants too :).
