easy birthday banner

My baby turned 2 today!

My mom made this quilt for him. She is amazingly talented. Like…amazingly…talented.

In honor of this big day, I decided to make a fun colorful felt banner for him that we can also keep for future birthdays. I admit that it is kind of cheesy, but it’s the kind of cheesy I happen to like…reminiscent of those shiny paper bubble letter banners…but better. I wanted a fun crazy banner that my kids would love.

It is a cinch to make.

You need about four yards of colorful bias tape, preferably double fold, felt {the by the bolt felt is often sturdier than the sheets}, and some ironing starch.

*I had all the felt leftover from another project and the bias tape from DI for 50 cents. So it was cheap cheap. A great time to buy felt is Black Friday or around Christmas time. It goes on sale for like a $1.50- $2 per yard. I only buy 1/8-1/4 of a yard of each color. So I can walk out with a bunch of different colors, with more felt than the sheets afford, and all for about  $1-2. There are SO many uses for felt, especially when it comes to kids so I think it is good investment.

So here is the super quick how to which is pretty much as quick as it is to make it:

I found out the hard way that the lowest cotton setting works best for felt. If it is too hot it will flake dried starch all over the letters. It rubs right off but it is annoying. You can skip the starch. I liked how it helps the letters firm up a little bit without having to sew a second layer on the back.

It is hard to believe my little baby is two! Here are all my boys enjoying our traditional family breakfast birthday party.
