Favorite Fleece Blanket

January 23, 2013 · Delia 11 Comments

We’ve been enduring sub zero temperatures here for weeks on end, so all I can think of are warm projects right now.

This blanket being one of them.
Kate from See Kate Sew brought class to fleece simply by binding it. Genius!
I happened to have the same fleece she uses in her tutorial, as well as some red/orange bias tape from the thrift store. It’s thinner but still worked out to be pretty cute!
I attached the bias tape on the normal way (without a binding foot). If you are familiar with bias tape, one edge is longer than the other, so when you fold it over it can be tricky to catch the other side. I got a a line of stitching on the other side of my blanket. I’m sure I could have remedied this with some good pinning but who wants to do that on a huge blanket? (not me obviously) It makes Kate’s binding foot a tempting buy.
I used 1 2/3 yards of fleece (instead of 2 yards) which makes a square blanket and I think it took just over 7 yards of bias tape (so you’ll still need to buy 3 packages).
Really…even with the exposed stitching, I think it looks pretty nice. It doesn’t take a lot of sewing, time, or experience either. If you’ve never sewn on bias tape, this project is a great one to practice on and learn how.
I don’t know how my kids can stand not wearing socks in this weather. I am constantly reminding them to get socks on before we leave the house.
Crazy kids. 馃檪
If it’s warm where you are, please send some of 聽that warmth over here! 馃檪

Very cute! Love the pop of red. Confession: I'm so bad at keeping that underside stitch of binding invisible that I just finished some potholders with a zigzag. With quilts I usually handsew just to avoid it! 馃槈

Ooh thanks Kristin! I'll have to try a zig zag next time. I didn't want to spent a ton of time hand stitching binding onto a fleece blanket, but for a quilt I definitely would.

Pretty! It's freezing here too….well actually I WISH it were freezing. It's 8 degrees right now and with the humidity it feels like 8 below. Brrrrr.

My kids are always taking their socks off, too. Nicole came home from school with socks from school the other day because she had gone to school with none, I was mortified. A few days later I asked her if she had socks on when she went and put her boots on, and she was like "No, but that's okay, my teacher has socks!" No! No! No! lol.

    That is awesome fleece!
And the weather…my family went last weekend to visit my brother that lives up there by you and I was a big baby and stayed home because of the cold.

    Try to stay warm!

Ooo I love it! I’m seriously considering trimming off the knots around my kids’ fleece blankets I made them over a year ago and sprucing them up with some binding 馃檪 [I’m not a fan of the knots, but I didn’t know of another way to do it!]
