Guest Blogger: The Style Projects

April 11, 2011 · Delia 2 Comments

Hello…I hope you guys all had a wonderful weekend. We were steeped in SNOW the whole weekend. Yes, I said snow. But it’s finally melting again so things are looking up.

Today, I am pleased to introduce you to Sharde.

She is a super cute girl, who is just shy of 21, and already with a fun creative blog of her own, called The Style Projects.

She sews, she has hair tutorials. She of course has great style. I wish I looked this good lounging around my house. but…I definitely do not. 馃檪

She made this cool no sew lacy shirt project,

And she makes {my favorite of all her projects}… cute hair accessories.

She is going to share another hair accessory with us today plus a bonus skinny belt version.

So here is Sharde herself…

Hey everyone 馃檪 I’m Sharde’ and I’m on a personal quest for my own style. I’m a full-time nanny during the day, and an Aveda hairstylist by night. Even with such little free time I’m obsessed with fashion, crafting, and hair. I’m so excited to be here today because I’ve basically read every one of her posts! After getting so much inspiration from Delia, I’m just so glad to be able to give some to all of you!
聽So here goes. 聽
聽
Today’s tutorial is a double-whammy, a two-in one how-to for a headband and high-waisted聽
skinny belt!
First, I’m going to tell you how to make the headband, and then the revisions you need to know to make your skinny belts!
Get your materials together.
You’ll need:
scissors (or a rotary cutter)
vinyl (pleather)
hooks and eyes
hot glue gun
buttons
needle and thread
Cut an oval shape from your vinyl. It doesn’t have to be exact because this should look messy and random. Take your glue gun and glue a manageable section of glue onto your oval. Start encrusting it with your buttons!
It should look something like this:
See how there are some empty spots? I had some pearl beads lying around the house, so I used those to fill in the holes.
Now, take a piece of ribbon or a tape measure and measure the circumference of your head. I used a piece of ribbon and cut it to the size of my head. You are going to want your piece of vinyl slightly smaller than the length you measure- the vinyl has a teeny bit of stretch and you will also be adding the hook and eye so have it about 1/2″ smaller than your circumference.
I don’t own a ruler so I just traced my ribbon with the rotary cutter.
Now, take your needle and thread, your hook and eyes and sew them on like so.
Make sure that you sew the hook and eye onto the vinyl a tad further back from the edge so that the thread does not slip off. Trust me, it will if you do it too close!
Try it on and make sure it works for you. Figure out where you would like to put your button oval and get to gluing!
And there you have it, a ridiculously cute headband that everyone will ask, “Hey, where’d you get that?”
聽
Now for the revision you have to make for the belts.
Follow the same steps as before for creating your length for the belt. Measure your waist where you want it to fall and cut your vinyl to length. Sew on your hook and eye the same way that you would for the headband.
Now here’s the difference. Whether you make a bow or you decide to have the encrusted button oval, pay attention here! You need to adhere your accent to the end of the strip, like so:
If you decide to make a bow, all you have to do is cut a rectangle from the vinyl and pinch it together and hot glue it on with another small strip of vinyl and you’re done. Simple.
Thanks to Delia for letting me post for you all today! I hope you like it 馃檪

Sharde! I love it. That bow belt is already on my to do list.

I hope you were inspired by Sharde today. Head on over to her blog for more great projects…

Have wonderful day!

Cute belts! And what a cute girl. I don’t look that stylish lounging around the house either. In fact, I’m not feeling well today, so it’s a messy bun and a cozy jog suit. Definitely not attractive. I’m going to attempt one of these belts for my uber stylish daughter!
