Seafarer Top Pattern Review

June 7, 2013 · Delia 15 Comments

I love yellow but I don’t have a lot of yellow in my summer wardrobe.

So, when Abby from Sew Much Ado asked me to be apart of the Seafarer Top Pattern Tour and try out her new pattern. I thought it was the perfect time to break out some of my yellow knit fabrics and add more yellow tops to my closet!

They are both striped, no surprise there :), but one is neon yellow and heather gray (from Hobby Lobby long ago that I’ve been hoarding), and the other is a goldenrod, oatmeal/gray stripe (from Girl Charlee – HERE). Two totally different yellows for totally different looks.

The fit was spot on if you follow the measurement chart she provides. I am a bit of a pear shape, so I cut a size XS with a size S width at the hips. I just cut the XS and tapered it out a bit at the bottom to the larger size.

I really like how long the top is, and how comfortable and modest the fit is. I didn’t have to add any length or anything. The dolman sleeves and the ease around the stomach is perfect for a still post-baby body. It’s really a flattering fit in general for all body types.

She provides options for bands at the neck, arm and waist. You can pick and choose all, none, or some.

I really like the finished look the neck band gave, so I included that in both my tops. I tried one with the arm band and one without. I honestly love it both ways. It really gives the shirt a different look with just a small change that takes really no extra time.

I haven’t tried the waistband yet or the pocket option, but these tops come together so fast, I know I will in the future!

If you are worried about working with knits, because you haven’t before, Abby includes a whole page of detailed tips and information to help you along.

And you do not need a serger! A serger is faster, so if you’ve got one use it, but she shows you how to make one without it.

The best thing about this pattern and sewing in general, is that I can make the clothes to fit me and my non-industry standard body. I love my new tops so much!..and the dark yellow was about $5 thanks to Girl Charlee knits

I am almost at the caboose of the Seafarer Top Pattern Tour, but here’s a look at how the tour has been taking shape. Anna is next…ooh can’t wait! Love her.

I LOVE the fabrics you chose! I'm surprised that you typically wear a size S-M, but fit so well in the XS-S size shirt….it looks great on you! I typically wear an XS, but had to size up to a S-M in the Seafarer. Funny how the same size can fit so differently!

You are so cute! I really love those yellow stripes. I'm so going to channel you tomorrow with my scoop top, bermuda jorts, and chucks. Such a laid back but cute style! And now I've said cute twice, so i'm outta here. (three times!)

Jenn – I should wear an xs but those shirts are often too short on me. So, maybe that's why? And I often shop in the Junior's section, because I like the colors they have. It seems like I have to go up to M in Juniors but can do a S in the ladies department.

Crafterhours – haha…what's wrong with cute? :)I just realized I was the only one to not accessorize my top…but
