Christmas Pajamas

December 28, 2012 · Delia 10 Comments

Morning!

I hope you all have been having a wonderful holiday season!

We had a great Christmas and now are enjoying the down time, laying around the house in our pajamas, playing in the snow (we’re having a white Christmas!Yay!), and giving the house a good scrub.

I’m going to keep things festive around here while I share the rest of our Christmas, starting with some pajamas I made for the boys.

I was running out of time before Christmas and was just going to buy some pajamas at the store. But…I could either not find any I liked or that I was willing to spend money on. The mound of knit and ribbing I already had in my stash was haunting me, telling me it would only take one night to just whip up some pajamas. So, I gave in. 馃檪

I used T-shirt patterns I drafted from existing shirts for Project Run & Play and a great legging pattern from Go To Patterns:

Go To Leggings

I must say that Andrea’s way of installing an elastic waistband is now my favorite.

If you don’t have a shirt pattern already, Made by Rae has a great T-shirt pattern with ribbing:

Flashback Skinny Tee

Even better, Peek-a-boo Patterns also has a pajama pattern that will take care of the top and pants:

Alex & Anna Winter Pajamas

The patterns are really great and take out the guess work for you. I just used what I already had on hand to save money and time. If I were to make these again, from the patterns I used, I would slim down the shirt and make the leggings a bit baggier (for boys).

To make the leggings more pajama like, I simply added some ribbing to the bottom.

The process is really simple:

1. Cut off about 2 inches off the bottom of your leggings. Cut some ribbing about an inch narrower than the circumference of the bottom of the pants and twice as long as you want the finished band of ribbing to be, plus one inch. Sew the ribbing into a tube with 1/2 inch seam allowance.

2. Fold the ribbing tube in half, wrong sides together.

3. Slip the tube over the bottom of the leggings.

4. With raw edges together, pin the ribbing to the leggings at the seam and the opposite side.

5. Stretch the ribbing (not the leggings) and serge all the way around. Use the pins to help you keep the stretch even all the way around.

6. Turn it right side out. Done!

I used the same process for the sleeves in the shirt, and a similar one of for the neckline.

I couldn’t bear to leave the pajamas plain but I also didn’t have much time to spend on meticulously cutting out a cute graphic.

Remembering a cute wall reindeer made out of washi tape that The Salty Pineapple posted on instagram聽earlier聽this month (it’s also in this post here), I whipped up a super quick stick reindeer. To save even more time, I drew one reindeer and cut two layers of freezer paper out at the same time.

Ta da. I actually, totally love it.

Not too Christmas, but still festive enough.

The boys seem to like their pajamas. 馃檪

Cute little crazies.

You know the best part? These pajamas cost less than three dollars each. 馃檪 I bought the ribbing on clearance from Joann long ago wondering when I was ever going to use it, used some leftover knit from another outfit I made for Owen, and the rest from a jersey knit bed sheet I thrifted for $2. I still have a ton left over too. Good thing I like to wear gray! ha!

I seriously love sewing. 馃檪

Before I leave you, I have a bit of business to take care of. I didn’t hear back from one of the Melly Sews 3 Pattern giveaway winners, so I have chosen a new one.

Connie who said, “I love her patterns! I’d love to make something adorable for my nephew and niece!”

You have won your choice of one pdf pattern! Congrats!

(Check your inbox for an email from me.)

I’ll be back with more Christmas coming up.

Hope you’re having a fun Friday!

Christmas, holiday, sewing

They look great and I'm jealous how you are able to whip these up so quickly, one day soon I need to improve on that part before my kids grow up too fast and we miss out.

Love, love, Love these jammies, definitely need to make some for my boys! Just curious, but what kind of serger do you have? That looks like a coverstitch on the waistband, but those machines are way out of my price range! Thanks!
