Nesting: Ruched Onsies

Ready for a five minute project?

Not one of those projects that “say” they’ll take five minutes but they end up taking 20-30. No no. Really five minutes to make one of these…

You might have seen a sneak peak at these babies when I posted about the easy baby skirts yesterday. 😉

All right…let’s get to it.

All you need is a onsie, a 2-3 inch strip of 1/4 inch wide elastic, and matching thread.

Flip your onsie inside out.

Mark the middle line on the inside of the front of the onsie.

Place the elastic near the collar and sew back and forth a few times at the top. I lengthened my stitch to 3.5.

Then while pulling the elastic {not the onsie} straight stich down about two inches. Go slow.

Sew back and forth again a few times.

Snip off any excess elastic and threads.

Turn right side out.

Ta da. Instant girliness. 🙂

I have wondered about how the elastic might irritate her chest but it’s a pretty small piece. I only ruched three onsies just in case.

You could also use elastic thread, but that might take more than five minutes and I’m not sure how good a ruching you can get with one line of stitching? Let me know if you try it.

I had this coral onsie, originally yellow, that I picked the graphic off of and then dyed.

For some reason the place where the graphic had been removed, was still obvious even after repeated washings. Luckily I had a random of spool of coral thread in my stash.

After a good ruching, you can hardly tell.

It’s a simple little touch but I think adds a lot of character.

Thanks for reading. I hope your day is lovely.

Um I love those! Too bad a boy would look funny in these. 🙂 Way cute, and a great way to convert to girliness. And I saw them yesterday and wondered if you'd done that!

Those are so cute! I was hoping you'd post a little tutorial on how you made them.

I'm thinking that if the elastic becoms bothersome, some of that soft fabric stabilizer that's on the inside of appliqued shirts might take care of it? However, I think it will probably be just fine. There's a lot of exposed elastic in baby clothes.

You could use the ultra soft elastic meant for underwear…. (who makes their own underwear??)

um… why would you want to use a cleavage-enhancing design feature on an infant? doesn't that strike you as even slightly odd?

So cute and I had no idea it was so easy. Might try on bigger girl teeshirts that need a little something.

Very cute… Did the white stitching on the onesie stay that color when you dyed it or did you topstitch?

I’ve been looking for ways to make the sleeves look girlier. On my own shirts I’ve snipped off the ends and then sewn a tight zig-zag along the edge and it stretches out to make a frilly, ruffly sort of edge. I wonder if you did a line of rouching down the shoulders what that would look like? I love your idea – I’ll be trying it soon!
