Project Run and Play Look One

September 14, 2012 · Delia 53 Comments

It’s here! It’s here. The first day of Project Run & Play Season 5 is finally here!

I had a lot of fun making an outfit for Natalie.

I chose her as my model, because I know that sewing for her will feel the most rewarding, whether I win or not.

Her dress is a basic A-line shift dress in a mustard yellow, linen look fabric, made from a pattern I drafted using five other dresses as guidelines (and lots of old bed sheets as muslin prototypes :)).

The challenge was to create a look based off Katy’s bias skirt tutorial.

I translated it into an understated asymmetrical detail on the bottom corner of the dress, lining the bias strips up at one side in an upside down V shape.

Even with the bias strip detail, the dress is quite simple, so I thought I would spice things up a bit in the back with a surprise exposed zipper.

Since Fall is upon us, it’s already been quite chilly in the mornings and evenings here, I decided that this look would need some layers to help warm it up.

I made some snug stretch lace leggings to go underneath, made from a thrifted woman’s shirt.

Then, I made a cute cardigan to layer on top.

This is probably my most favorite piece. I love cardigans myself, so a baby cardigan…oh kill me. I love it. I even snapped pictures for a tutorial using just a onsie as a pattern, so you should see that coming up.

It’s made from a funky sleeveless sweater I found at my local thrift shop.

I set out one Saturday, to find a black and white striped sweater and there it was, just sitting there waiting for me on the thrift store hanger, with the perfect stripe width and everything. It was surely meant to be. I’m positive Natalie will be wearing it with most everything she owns, since it’s so versatile.

This photo shoot was really so funny.

She was not interested in me at all! I was hard pressed to get her to look at me which is usually not the case.

She kept looking off frame at the remote control truck Reid was driving around behind me. I guess that is more interesting than me spitting raspberries at her. ๐Ÿ™‚

Then I tried giving her an apple as a prop.

It made for some cute pictures.

But she looked up at me even less. She could not keep her eyes off that apple!

I can’t help but wonder if she was thinking something like…”If only I had teeth…” ha ha.

Did I tell you she turned 6 months old last week, has been teething and been eating solids? She’s growing up so fast. Too fast.

So, there it is…

Look one.

Oh…I named it, Simple Lines. I think it’s fitting.

Be sure to go to Project Run & Play and vote for your favorite look here.

Happy weekend to you!

P.S. I also happen to be guest posting today at I’m Feeling Crafty for Louise’s Sew Ready to Play series. If you get a chance. Come say hi!

Probably why so many of us commenters want it for ourselves It's a great transition-to-fall outfit and i LOVE that you went tonal and minimalist with the bias strips. Great work!!
