Strappy Flip Flops

June 15, 2011 · Delia 47 Comments

I got a pair of flip flops from the Old Navy $1 flip flop sale last month and almost instantly knew I wanted to do this to them:
I call them my…
It’s pretty simple, but here is a quick tutorial to make things even easier.
Take a pair of flip flops and some 3/8 inch wide elastic. You will need about a yard for each foot, depending on how strappy you want to get.
Loop the elastic around your foot and the shoe until you get a style you like.
Then pin it in place with safety pins. You don’t want to get pricked when you try to take the shoe off.
Remove the safety pins and re-pin with sewing pins. Sew.
For the back strap or heel strap, I sewed it together.
Fanned out the sides and sewed along those sides as well.
And done!
It looks a bit like a mess at first, but all you need to to is pull it out like so… {that is, if you used my design}
Then following the natural curve of the larger loop of elastic, double it up. Don’t just twist it. You’ll get uncomfortable twisted knots and bumps.
Slide your foot in and pull the back/bottom strap over your heel. Voila!
I didn’t sew the elastic twist around my ankle because I want it to move with me. If you sew it, it restricts the movement and can get pretty tight around your ankle. Just be aware of that.
And if you’re wondering, yes I am wearing a long sleeve shirt in the middle of June!
We have had the most wonderful weather. It’s been sunny with off and on rain which has made our days a steady 60-70 degrees. It’s supposed to finally warm up soon, but I have loved it, except for the fact that I don’t have a tan yet. 馃檪
All the rain has made my hair nice and curly too.
My hair is naturally wavy but looks really wacky most days hence why I wear it up in a bun most of the time or just flatten it; but every once in a while I’ll wake up with something a little more wearable.

And just because we’re already off topic…Jared was taking pictures of me in the backyard. The neighbor boy came out in his pajamas to see what in the world we were doing, so Jared took a picture of his shoes too. 馃檪 Hi cute Conner toes.

These are honestly so comfy. The shoe feels more secure on my foot and the elastic is smooth and easy to wear.

You’ll have to look past my dry skin and nubby toes…I am not pretending false modesty when I say I could never be a foot model. But I do feel like these sandals make my feet look a little prettier too 馃檪

And don’t those straps just look cool when I lay my feet like this?
Have a happy day!

You are awesome, not only do these shoes look like fun but also comfortable. They would be great for kids that want to wear flip flops but they look like they are on stilts doing so.

At first I thought these were going to be totally complicated but then I read on. This looks pretty easy and totally worth the fiddling with the elastic. So cute! Thanks for sharing 馃檪

cute! i have a pair of sseko sandals that are similar, but extra awesome because you can lace them with whatever fabric you want.

check 'em out over at http://www.onemango tree.com i love these guys- they partner with women in uganda who sew these GORGEOUS things with africa-print fabrics and then use the money to send the women and their kids to school.
