Wrap dress no pattern

No tutorial for this one… sorry. It was kind of an experiment.

So…I have tried a few things with tissue paper patterns. They have either ended up disastrous or really boxy/homemade looking. I have not had much luck. Now I KNOW they have to work because so many people use them and have great results.

I…however…seem to be tissue paper pattern challenged. I have had much much better success with tutorials and now… trying to copy real clothes I own.

I took a wrap dress that I already have, that I love the shape of, but am not crazy about the print.

Then I used up the rest of this thermal knit I got from Walmart that I also used for these shirts, to make a dress I am little more crazy about!

It was totally trial and error but I am mostly pleased with the end result. The belt ties are are little too homemade looking but that is okay for now.

I sewed my first darts. Yay. That was pretty exciting for me.

The wrap dress is perfect for a fairly new sewer. There are no zippers – I will conquer those one day…one day!, no snaps, no buttons, and not a ton of detail.

Working with jersey I am sure saved me as well. It is very forgiving and wears well.

Hmmm….I wonder what else in my closet I could try copying?

I LOVE it in jersey. Wow, I am really surprised that is worked so well with the jersey. You're kinda making me crazy because I don't have time to keep up! 😛

And have I told you I love your boots. Seriously, so cute!

Yes! Now you know exactly what I mean about not buying patterns and just using your own clothes to create new stuff. Patterns never seem to do exactly what you're hoping they will (well, those McCalls tissue types at least :))
Beautiful dress. Love the color, love it with the boots.

How did I not see this? I love finding old things I missed on your blog. I have a closet full of clothes that I an waiting to rip apart and use as a pattern. Someday when my kids don’t need anything and I can get some courage. thanks for inspiring me again.

Very nice dress! I’m about to try to copy a wrap dress I already have and make it with a winter white sweatery type fabric I just bought. I want to make it long with long sleeves for the winter. In my mind, it will be shapely and look great with boots! Wish me luck!
