Nativity Finger Puppets

December 10, 2010 · Delia 10 Comments

My five year old and I sat down this morning to make these finger puppets. I saw them in Desert Book and thought it would be fun to make our own.

I got these boy’s gloves from Walmart. You get two pairs for just $1.

We didn’t follow a pattern. We just took my scrap felt collection and winged it.

I quickly discovered that although Owen can cut a big felt bird out, cutting small puppet pieces out of felt is more difficult for him. I ended up doing most of the cutting while he supervised. He took special interest in designing Joseph but not too much beyond that. I also did all the gluing since we were using hot glue.

So not surprisingly, once Joseph and half the puppets were done he decided to move onto another project of his own.

He made this “Spiderman trap cage thingy,” {his words} had me glue it, and went off to play while I finished the rest.

He did enjoy playing with the puppets once I was done.

We don’t have enough people in our family of four to reenact the Nativity, and are seeing extended family before Christmas but not on Christmas this year.

We might use these puppets instead to help keep the kids interested while we read the Nativity on Christmas Eve.

Don’t you love this cheesy grin?

One tip…when you glue the puppets onto the fingers of the gloves, stick a pencil or a stick into the finger you are gluing so that the finger won’t glue itself together and close up.

Happy Holidays!
