My baby is ONE!

I can hardly believe it. I’ve had flashback thoughts all weekend of what I was doing a year ago.

Having my water break on our stairs. Bringing her into the world less than three hours later. Meeting this gorgeous,聽feisty聽soul who tried rolling over when they weighed her.

Witnessing her dad tenderly and expertly give her, her first bath.

Snuggling this beautiful soul in the quiet stillness of a hospital room, while my husband took care of the boys at home.

Seeing my boys meet her for the first time and instantly falling in love.

We kept things low-key and small, and just had my parents over for her birthday “party.” By party I mean, we all gathered around and gawked at her while she played with her birthday balloon and tried her first taste of cake.

I really don’t think she enjoyed the attention all that much…or the cake. 馃檪

I love seeing babies reactions to their first piece of birthday cake.

Owen poked at his cake, tried to shake it off, signed “drink” and “asked” for a napkin right after.

Reid happily dug into his cake, ate it by the fistfuls and smeared it ALL over his body.

Natalie was perturbed that we told her not to touch the candle. When Owen was done helping her blow out said candle, she kicked the cupcake over with her foot. She was bothered that we shoved her聽reluctant聽hand into frosting, gagged a little upon tasting it, but then enjoyed a few licks before asking to be done. ha ha 馃檪 Memories…

We moved her from the table to her high chair to see if that would help her feel more comfortable eating it.

She was not impressed with that idea. 馃檪

It wasn’t until the next day when we had leftover cake (and no audience), that she finally appreciated the frosting.

I admit that I was relieved because I put a lot of effort into this cake. It’s a bit special, you see. She is allergic (at least for now we think) to dairy, egg, and intolerant to soy. 聽This cake is free from all of those things. I experimented and came up with a a frosting recipe that I am excited to share with you tomorrow. I’ll also share the link to the cake recipe I used.

Oh baby….what a lovely, adventurous, wild, wonderful,

…joyful year it’s been having you join our family. I feel it a聽privilege聽to love you, Nat.

    It's incredible how the time runs away… we've just celebrated the 3rd birthday of my little boy too!
    Lucky me that he doesn't have allergic problems! It must be very difficult, I'm curious to read the recipe.

  18. How cute! My daughter is just a few weeks older than yours, and it’s nice to see someone else with the same hair growth! However, mine had the opposite reaction to her cake. Fistfuls until the crumbs were too small, then she picked up the plate in both hands and literally licked it clean.

  21. Oh, so sweet! Happy birthday to your little girl! And my congratulations to you as Mum 馃檪 My own boy just turned 2 just a day ago. His first birthday cake he simply DEMOLISHED. We laughed until our sides ached. Many of our friends haven’t forgotten that, either 馃槅

  22. Oh happy birthday! My littlest girl will be one in two weeks and I also love seeing the changes between your gorgeous one and my little Lucy! I would love your recipe for the frosting and the cake as my oldest who is three is dairy and soy allergic! We are lucky she can have egg!!

  25. Happy birthday, Natalie! I love the one where she’s in her highchair glaring at the camera looking utterly perturbed that a cake is in front of her!

    My little guy is also intolerant to dairy and couldn’t take egg whites at his first birthday (but he can now), so we made chocolate pudding with coconut milk (only takes egg yolks). We got some great messy face pics 馃檪

    Kudos to you for making a yummy-looking cake without those ingredients! Avoiding foods can be rough–keep up the good work 馃檪

  26. My second daughter’s birthday video has us all singing happy birthday while she cries away… I think the candle scared her for some reason. I am happy to report that she does not cry anymore (though is still wary of birthday candles!)

  27. Ack, she is such a doll, and I was going to claim to not believe any of it but I guess she does kind of look like she’s one alluvasudden, hey? Maybe it’s that hair starting to really show up! Whaaaat! Something about her face is starting to look a bit older too. I’d still eat her for dessert, though.

    Ledys – oh that is so cute/funny. I love hearing kids’ first reactions to their birthday cakes.

    Anna – Oh I love that. Reid was like that too. He was in heaven squishing it with his hands and feet.

    Amanda – oh bald babies. I was one too, so if she follows suit, she’ll be bald until after 2.

    Laura – she does look older to me already too! So sad, but fun!

  31. I cannot believe it has been a year! I remember anticipating Natalie’s arrival from across the miles. It has been fun to watch her grow and to see all the adorable creations you have made for her. Happy Birthday Natalie!
