The Tale of Two Staple Dresses

May 9, 2014 · Delia 29 Comments

If you haven’t checked out my Arizona fabric post from yesterday, you must!

Staple Dresses (34 of 37)

Today, I am sewing up more from April Rhodes’ new fabric line Arizona AND I’m using one of her patterns, The Staple Dress. I sewed it up in the Triangle Tokens voile fabric in her collection. It is a lovely mint, with white and gold triangles. The feel of it is buttery soft and so delicious!

edit7-002Is it weird that I often describe fabric in food terms? Don’t answer that….I probably will anyway, even if it’s weird. 馃槈 Because this stuff is so delectable, I tell ya.聽聽Staple Dresses (31 of 37)I am obsessively hoarding my scraps for future projects. 馃檪

Because of the pastel color of the voile, I must warn you that it is quite see through. I really should have sewn in a lining, but alas did not. A tank top and slip do聽the trick nicely though.

Staple Dresses (33 of 37) edit7-004I have sewn the Staple dress before but in knit and in a polyester silk blend. It is fun to see how the dress takes on a different shape depending on the fabric. The cottons in April’s Arizona collection are so soft, I think those fabrics would do nicely for this dress as well.

It is such a forgiving pattern in sizing and in sewing. It’s a great first dress pattern if you’re a newbie and my favorite go to quick selfish sewing pattern.

edit7-003I also love this dress for it’s comfort. I could literally sleep in this dress and not care.

I love it so much so, I made a second Staple dress (what can I say, I like to sew them in pairs), this time in a mystery fabric that was gifted to me by my mother. She grabbed a few yards of it聽I think at a Hancock’s fabric liquidation sale. I have no guess as to what it really is. I just know that is has a nice solid mid-weight feel and fluid drape. edit7 Staple Dresses (4 of 37) At first, I wasn’t too excited about the print thinking it was kind of generic, but when I looked up close I realized it was little grains of rice and loved it.

Staple Dresses (5 of 37)

I made both Staple dresses longer than the original pattern. I really like the elegance of聽midi-length skirts and dresses.

Staple Dresses (2 of 37)

Especially when paired with a blazer (this one is from H&M).

I am not sure why, but whenever I take pictures for Staple dresses it always happens to be a windy day! Which is fine by me. It’s nice to have a built in photoshoot fan. 馃槈 ha. Staple Dresses (21 of 37)

Have a great weekend! 馃檪

They both look awesome! I actually just printed off the Staple Dress pattern on Friday, and now that I’m on the other side of that birthday party I can give it some attention. And I LOVE that Arizona fabric. Can’t wait to get my hands on some, and it looks great in that aqua color!

PS-You have been hiding some very long hair in those top knots! 馃檪

You are going to love it (if you haven’t already sewn it up that is! ha). And thank you for noticing that I am trying to grow my hair out. 馃槈 I don’t know how long I’ll last, because this about the length that I decide to chop it off to chin length and start over. I am trying hard to resist this time though!

How hard was this dress to sew? I am a teacher and I would like to make myself a great first garment this summer!

It is relatively simple and easy to sew. There are no darts or shaping or anything like that. It is also so comfy to wear. I highly recommend it for a summer dress! 馃檪

The dresses look great on you! I cannot wait to get my hands on some of that triangle voile. I ran across it on Stash Fabrics and have had a hard time getting it out of my mind. I’m also eyeing the Staple dress pattern. I’m going to be nursing for at least the next year, so I’ll have to hold off on making anything for myself from that pattern. Or maybe I’ll just start sewing now and maybe I’ll end up with a closet full of Staple dresses. 馃槈

Seriously, it’s my favorite dress to wear! I hear ya on the nursing and dresses dilemma though. Maybe add a placket so you can unbutton it?

The older you get, the more likely it is that you’ll start to experience thinning and hair
loss. If the drugs damage cell activity during the anagen phase, then hair loss is noticeable within a
couple of weeks. It improves your hair’s elasticity,
    texture and strength.

These both look fantastic, please could you let me know what size you made – or how much ease? I really love the roomy-ness of the cut on you but would have no idea where to start to choose a size for myself.

Hi Frances! Thanks! I sewed the size XS with added length on the bottom. I didn’t add any ease. April adds in a good amount of ease to the pattern as is. I don’t perfectly fall into the XS measurements, I’m an inch wider in the waist and hips, and it still fits great. You can also always blend sizes if there is a bigger difference between your top and bottom measurements. It’s a really forgiving pattern. I hope that helps!
